قد يشير فقدان الوزن غير المبرَّر أو نقص الوزن عن غير عمد، خاصةً إذا كان شديدًا أو مستمرًا، إلى وجود اضطراب طبي.

لا توجد درجة معينة يصبح معها فقدان الوزن غير المبرر مصدرًا للقلق من الناحية الطبية. لكن العديد من الأطباء يتفقون على ضرورة إجراء تقييم طبي إذا فقدت أكثر من 5% من وزنك خلال 6 إلى 12 شهرًا، خاصةً إذا كنت من كبار السن. على سبيل المثال، فقدان الوزن بنسبة 5% لشخص يبلغ وزنه 160 رطلاً (72 كغم) يساوي 8 أرطال (3.6 كغم). وبالنسبة إلى الشخص الذي يبلغ وزنه 200 رطل (90 كغم)، يكون الوزن 10 أرطال (4.5 كغم).

يتأثر وزنك بالسعرات الحرارية التي تتناولها ومستوى النشاط والصحة العامة. وتؤثر قدرتك على امتصاص العناصر المغذية من الطعام الذي تتناوله أيضًا على وزنك. وقد تؤدي العوامل الاقتصادية والاجتماعية دورًا أيضًا.
