Can Sungur, M.D., Ph.D., is a board-certified rheumatologist with expertise in inflammatory arthritis. He is an assistant professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine and also part of the Department of Immunology.

He grew up in rural Minnesota and attended medical school at University of California, Davis where he obtained his PhD in Immunology as well. He studied the role of natural killer cells in antiviral and antitumoral responses and helped identify unique subsets of these cells. He completed a residency in internal medicine and fellowship in rheumatology at Washington University in St. Louis. He continued as a post-doctoral fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Wayne Yokoyama studying the development of inflammatory arthritis in HIV. He was appointed as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Washington University Chapter. He was given the Knowlton Incentive for Excellence Award at Washington University for compassionate patient care.

His clinical and research interests are in inflammatory arthritis and infection-associated arthritis. He aims to further clarify the interconnectedness of chronic infections and development of autoimmunity including in HIV, hepatitis, cytomegalovirus, and COVID.
